Wrapping up March!

Wow, March flew by.  Illinois, where I live, has had the most unusual March weather, it has been like May around here.  I hope we won't get the March snow and cold in April.  Just in case I haven't put away the kid's boots and snow pants!

Anyway, I decided to share a little Easter card I made with mushrooms and hedge hogs.  Not your usual Easter type card that is for sure.

The stamp images are from Dilly Beans as is the sentiment.  The little chick with the bunny ears, I'm not sure who manufactured him but I found him in my Easter stash.  He is just so cute and was a perfect little addition, plus now he can be friends with the hedge hogs!

Next I have an ATC to share with a Happy Easter theme.  Again the images are from Dilly Beans.  I love how bright and happy this turned out to be.  Again I found a few little embellishments in my Easter stash to add, but my favorite thing about this ATC is the chick with the pink bow.

Wishing you a Wonderful Easter and Happy Crafting!

We Love Lily Bee Design

Each year, as we roam the halls of CHA, the Lily Bee Design booth has become a perennial favorite. A few of us are die hard fans that look forward to the beautiful, classic designs that Kristen and her team create. They work beautifully for layering, using with your die cut machine and especially for clean and simple layouts. I thought I would share with you all a few creations I made using two of Lily Bee's brand new releases. They should all be arriving at a store near you if they haven't already. :)

First up is a layout and an altered canvas using Victoria Park. I love the slightly bold pastel colors mixed with the black. This collection was designed by Lily Bee design team member Julia Stainton. So beautiful!

Everytime I dig into the papers from Lily Bee, I begin to dream up ways to use them with my Silhouette Cameo. The flowers and black border at the bottom are shapes from the Silhouette.

These were the first collections I've used that include the die cut bits. The banner on this layout uses them. And the little flower shapes in the bottom right of the layout are as well. So cute and add that perfect touch.

The pinwheel flower is also a Silhouette shape.

For this next layout I used the Handmade Collection. LOVE the colors and quilted elements included in this collection.

The flower and word 'memories' are cut with the Silhouette Cameo. Something that has become a fun new way to add texture is jute or twine doodling. Adds a perfect amount of whimsy, don't you think?

Lily Bee Design has two more collections that were released for Spring/Summer. Head on over to their blog to view them and all the wonderful creations their new design team is creating!

Why I make cards

Just a few quick pics of this versatile new stamp set called Joyful Jar from Close to My Heart. I also used a doily die from Spellbinders and the Grandma's Doily and Scalloped Circle punches from Fiskars (and a few others tools, punches,  and papers in my stash).

*A quick tip...those itsy, bitsy, teeny, weeny stamps stick perfectly to the top of a glue stick cap. I can stick my finger in the cap and stamp, stamp, stamp!

Now, we come to the reason why I make cards. It was my birthday last week, and this was the card I received in the mail from a family member. This is a beautiful store-bought card, IF YOU ARE A 99 YEAR OLD RETIRED FISHERMAN!

A beautiful hand-made card can be a gift in itself.
That is why I make cards.
Send one out that you've made today.

Graphic45 note pads~

Hi everyone~I wanted to share with you some really cute note pads that are easy to make and make great gifts!!  You take a piece of die cut paper and cut it in half, fold it in thirds, to make an envelope.  That will hold your note pad.  The note pads are about a 3"x 5".  Decorate the front of the envelope and there you have a sweet teachers gift that she will use!

These are done with Graphic45 papers.  Thanks for stopping by today and I will see you soon.

I Mix You

Hello everyone. Annette here with a fun card for you with a cute punny sentiment. Today's card features the mixer from the What's Shakin'? set by Pink by Design. This past Saturday, I went to a scrapbooking expo in Columbus, Ohio. One of the vendors, the Eyelet Outlet, had every kind of brad, ribbon and eyelet you could imagine. When I saw the mixer brads and ribbon, I snatched them up because I knew I could use it with the mixer stamp. Yay!! Often when I'm shopping for craft goodies, I think about what I own and whether a new item would complement my current stash. On the other hand, sometimes I see something that is so stinkin' cute that I just have to own it!! It's kind of like shopping for clothes. You look for pieces to complement your wardrobe, but sometimes you see a cute top or a fabulous pair of shoes and you just gotta have it!! I guess crafting embellishments have become my new shoes! LOL!!

Speaking of Pink by Design, they are having a spring blog hop At the end of the hop, you will have an opportunity to create a spring-inspired card using an inspiration photo as your jumping off point. Create your project and link it to the Pink by Design blog. One lucky winner will get a prize. Who knows? It could be you. You don't have to use Pink by Design stamps, but they always love to see how you use them. You have two weeks to do it!! Please make sure you link up by midnight on the 8th of April.

Here is the lineup for the blog hop

a different sort of paper craft

I have been taking this free e-class from a friend of mine. It's all about improving ourselves, finding our courage and inner strength and being confident, through art.
One of the first assignments was to take a quote and do an art journaling page inspired by it. This is the quote:

People are like stained-glass windows. They sparkle and shine when the sun is out,
but when the darkness sets in
their true beauty is revealed
only if there is light from within.
~Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Now, I have never done art journaling, but I have an idea what it's supposed to be like. Although I guess some people would say that it isn't 'supposed' to be like anything, but the pages often have a similar look. I decided to go a different route. I have some issues with stress, and have tried yoga, pilates and meditation. Yoga and pilates seem to work pretty well for me, because I can focus on more than just my breathing. Meditation, however, seems almost impossible. IF I do manage to succeed, I inevitably fall asleep.

Well, I heard about this art form called Zentangle, and it's sort of like meditation through doodling. I've been wanting to try it, but didn't get around to it. To be honest, I worried that I would spend too much time agonizing  over whether my doodles were 'good enough' to really get any relaxation in.

The quote gave me the push to try it though. The stained glass metaphor just seemed perfect for Zentangle.
Here is what I created: (sorry for the not great cell phone photo)
And you know what? It really worked! all the tiny details allow for a lot of just repetitious doodling, where I didn't feel the need to agonize over them. A few times I worried that I might use up my favorite pen, but like they teach in meditation, I just acknowledged that thought and then let it go.
Now, I know you are wondering, where do you even begin on something like this. Well, it's actually a LOT easier than it looks! I found a youtube video or two, and basically what they said was, that you start with the major separations. Don't even worry about the details. So, I started with the quote. I knew I wanted to put the 'stained glass' part in a 'window', then the sparkle and shine in a starburst. I emphasized the more important words and let the less important ones stay smaller. After I drew the sections that hold the quote, I started expanding on it: adding lines extending from the starburst, adding additional waves beside the part that says 'when the sun is out', doubling the lines that create the 'tear' where the darkness part is. Then I started filling in doodles. When I got done the two downward checked sections from the star, I decided that I wanted to make all the sections from the star checked, but the two upper ones were really large, so I added the sun and the rainbow to take up some of that space. It really just builds upon itself.
There are also tons of resources out there to get ideas of different types of doodles. I looked at some of them, but decided to start with simple and just do what came to me. I think, for my next one, I will also use a quote, because it helped to create some sort of flow for the piece. I have a hard time just sitting down with a blank piece of paper and starting something. But there will be a next time, because it was actually quite relaxing! I highly recommend it!

Why

Like most busy women, "me" time seems to be a rarity. But, today is my birthday, so I'm showing a page that actually has a picture of ME. This one is for "my" book. I have a scrapbook for each of the kids (I guess I should make that plural, they each have a few), and then I have a file folder where I put pages that I've done that I would like to eventually put in a book for ME. When I'm feeling a little guilty about spending some "me" time, I need to remember scrapping is for me, but it's also for everyone else. This page reminds me of that.

When was the last time you made a page for yourself? Don't wait for your birthday. Today is the day. Go...right now.

Older Posts

I've been going backward on our blog here checking out all the posted projects.  Just when you think you have seen the coolest thing, something else comes along that gets your creative juices bubbling over.  The talent and ideas shared here are incredible.

On that note, today I'm going to suggest that you check out as many old posts as possible and let your creative mind wander and re-charge.  There is inspiration here for everyone whether you stamp or scrap, whether you are simplistic with your style, technique crazed, or a dimension builder.  Grab a cup of (something), paper and pen (for note taking) and re-charge your creative mind.

Happy Crafting,

Melissa

Oldies but Goodies

It is still weird to me to refer to scrapbooking paper as "old" or "out of style". Isn't that what we say about clothing? And hair styles? I get a little chuckle over the fact we refer to paper crafting supplies with the same thought.  But I can see how we would. Colors that we enjoy change, patterns change, motifs change...

But some are timeless. Like red, green and polka dots. And boy do I hope kraft is a timeless elements too. What would I do without my kraft?

I recently dug into my stash and used some Pink Paislee papers from last year. (Oh my gosh.. sooo last season...) <--- teehee.  I also had some SRM Stickers from last year that I used. I LOVE how well the cupcake goes with the colors of the papers.

I still love how those white stickers POP on the kraft paper. *happy sigh*

The little tag for the sentiment is a stamped image using the banner stamp from the Pink Paislee collection - Hometown Summer. There is a sentiment already part of the stamp so I just inked around the edges and used an SRM sticker for the sentiment.

Showcasing the dimension. And you will notice the pattern on the inside. I used a 5x12 piece of the patterned paper and then stuck some kraft on the inside for a writing area. I love doing this so that there is pattern on the inside of the card too.

So what stash have you dug into? Is it really old or just a year old? And do you get a kick out of the whole "fashion approach" we have in the paper crafting world? "Oh my gosh I can't believe there's an owl on that... that's so 2010..."

I crack myself up.
